ALL IS WELL IN WELLS

On the recommendation of a random someone  we ran into at the bagel shop this fine morning we decided to spend a day in the "charming city of Wells".  It is the smallest city in England.  There is only one smaller city in the United Kingdom and that is in Scotland.  A town which has a cathedral located in it is designated a city.

So off we went at our discounted bus rate ( a concession you know) and arrived in Wells on Market Day.  Crowds of people, lots of activity, lots of fun!

We walked around the market at first and then went over to the Bishop's house where a small cafe was located.  It didn't appeal to us so we again went in search of a place to eat.  We found a pub down the street and after standing in line ( in a pub one always has to order at the bar) and waiting, and waiting, and waiting (some man in front of me with a glass in his hand looked at me and said "If it takes much longer I'll forget what I got in this fline to do" .  I had to agree.  There was a group of ladies ahead of us and they were obiously not the four beautiful ladies from Iona - more like the "five flighty dames from Bologna". Anyway we stuck it out and ordered our food.  We asked for an extra fork as Sharon and I were splitting a salad.  This goth like young lady delivered one fork to our table.  We all looked at eah other and wondered what she was thinking.  We finally got her to understand that we still needed all the required silverware.  Eventually our food was delivered and although not stellar it was OK and we did get a few chuckles.

After lunch we went to see the cathedral.  At this point I had kind of seen all the cathedrals I needed to for a while but maybe one more would  be nice.  This one was more than nice!  Absolutely beautiful!
"Set amidst the gentle countryside of the Somerset levels on the western slopes of the Mendip hills, there has been a sacred site beside the springs of fresh water at Wells for over a 1000 years.  The 12th century building that is Wells Cathedral is a masterpiece.  It is both beautiful and historical and is a centre of Christianity that has attracted pilgrams and tourists alike over the centuries.  Its calm and light atmosphere restores busy souls and minds and never ceases to inspire believers and non-believers alike."

The scissors arch was designed in medevil times to support an area which was falling down.  The arch with the crucifiction is breathtaking.

After spending time at the cathedral we deided to walk around the bishops house which is surrounded by a moat.

It was just the type of place you could sit, read a good bok and enjoy the family of swans swimming by.  We did see papa swan attack a dog while we watching him swim around.  The dog got too close and that doog just turned around and ran up to his master.

After walking almost around the moat we decided it was time for "cream tea".  We spotted a little outside area that was part of "The Swan Hotel" and went inside to order our cream tea.  Lovely!

That night, because we ate a light lunch, and only had scones with clotted cream and jam for our afternoon snack we went out to get a little bite to eat.
