The Food Lover Tour, is first and foremost a tour created for lovers of good food - "foodies" wishing to explore the local cuisine. ( A match made in heaven for Sandi and me.) They partner with a very small group of tapas restaurants that serve the best tapas - hot and cold- and snacks - in Barcelona.
The evening was beautiful and we were ready to meet new people and eat new foods. While we were waiting for our guide a young girl, working in Bulgaria introduced herself and pretty soon three new faces joined our group. All Doctors, specializing in Pediatric Neurology. All were attending a conference here. The Dr. left babies and husbands behind and the other young girl was single.
Our guide Lucie explained the plan for tthe evening and off we went. A couple were to meet us but after waiting 10 minutes we left without them.
Just as the food was coming and we were about to have Lucie explain everything to us the couple called and she had to leave to go meet them at our meeting place.
This shows some of the things we enjoyed. The first, to the left, is a bread which is coated with olive oil , garlic and some tomatoe. Missing is a dish of anchovies in vinegar. The dish in the front is a cod with tomato and vegetables on top and in the rear is an octopus salad. We also had some fish croquettes which you can barely see. This was accompanied by a wonderful white wine.
Here's the whole hungry and thirsty group!
Our next stop was a neighborhood type place. We were escorted to the back to our own barrell tables to enjoy this next batch of tapas.
We were served a drink called vermut. It's made with white wine and various herbs. Lucie explained that the taste will vary very much from bar to bar - depending on the herbs that are used. You can put some selzer water in it if you like. This particular vermut was delicious. Reminded me a bit of the dark Dubonnet. She also told us to be sure to ask for the bars homemade vermut so you don't get a bottled brand. The brew is generally made or at least stored in a barrel.
We enjoyed a wonderful sausage and mushroom dish, cheese with honey, a blood sausage which was really good. Lucie didn't tell us what it was until we had eaten some. Smart move because I doubt I would have eaten any and it was delicious.
Our last stop for the eveing was La Taverna, del Clinic on Carrer del Rossello.
We started again with the bread with olive oil ,garlic and tomatoes - not as much tomato this time. This is very typical and always served with tapas. The ham is Iberian . The best ham comes from bigs that are fed acorns, are free range, and comes from a black footed Iberian pig. It must also be cured for at least 36 months. This is very expensive ham and is served only on special occasions in the households in Spain.
Tomato and cheese with oil.
A potato croquette wrapped around some octopus sitting on octopus feet.
Well, Sandi and I are enjoying it! It is a little piece of very tender beef covered with a wonderful sauce.
And of course no dinner out would be complete without a little dessert. a tasty little lemon dessert with a slice of apple and ..
some truffles in a cute dish. Much like our lovely serving dishes at home.
This all went down with some lovely red wine!
It was late so we caught a cab home. Can you believe we were out later than the metro stayed open. First time for that!
