DAY TWO IN SALZBURG CONTINUES

We decided to go back to the Dom on our way up to visit the fortress.  We couldn't be in Salzburg without going into the Cathedral - could we?  With its magnificant facade and mighty dome it represents the most impressivee early Baroque edifice noth of the Alps.  This is infact the third church  constructed on this same site.  The first one was built in 767-774 under Bishop Virgil.  It was replaced in the 12th century with a Romanesque basilica.

The numbers above the gates in gold are the dates of the three consecrations.  Only two show here the third was in 1959.  There are four statues outside the church ( two pictured here).  They are Peter and Paul with keys and sword as well as two patron saints Rupert and Vigil with a salt bos and a model of the church.

The most fascinating thing about this Cathedral had to be the ceilings.

The ceiling in the dome

The babtismal font in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was babtised.

Another piece of art in the city.

We took the funicular to the top of the fortress.  We debated because the building ws closed but we could still walk around.  We decided we didn't need to see the inside of another building.  We must be getting tired - ha!  The views from the fortress grounds were spectacular.

We went into a little restaurant which had a great view and enjoyed a lovely glass of our now favorite Austrian white wine.  They had this placemat which named the mountain peaks we were looking at.

So way cool - sunglasses, mountains in the background and a glass of local wine!

Down the funicular and find the restaurant that had been recommended to us by the hotel staff.

Looking for the restaurant we came across these sites.

The Petersfriedhof or St. Peter's Cemetery is the oldest Christian graveyard in Salzburg dating back to 1627.  It is  also the place where the Von Trapp family hid out in The Sound of Music.

The cemetery consists primarily of Baroque porticoes housing chapels of Salzburg's old wealthy families.  Many of the aristocratic families of Salzburg lie buried here, along with many other notable figures.

The graves are lovingly tendered by Salzburg families, decorated with candles, fir branches, and flowers.  Pansies are the most popular flower, because their name means "thoughts".

St. Peter's church fouonded by St. Rupert in 696 AD.  The present building was constructed in the Romanesque period, then completely renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Baroque style.

Here Mozart's famous Mass in C Minor premiered in 1783, with his wife, Constanze, singing the lead soprano role.

We left the cemetery and walked around and around looking for our restaurant.  We saw the name of the restaurant but could not find the actual restaurant.  Twice we asked the same vendor as we circled his booth.  Finally we thought it had to be here.

Lovely "beer garden".

Lovely restaurant.

One could order ala carte or "a menu".  I of course had to order a menu - there were too many good things to choose from.  So they brought all my needed silverware.

This was just some oil and special butters for the bread.

This is a duck salad served with seasonal greens.  Everything about it was perfect.

Next course - green and white asparagus soup with champagne foam.

Pork with spinach gnocchi and spring carrots.  Delicious!

This is Sharon's green and white asparagus risotto.  I felt so badly having to eat all that other "stuff" while Sharon just looked on.  I did offer a taste of everything but she passed.  She did have her lovely Austrian wine to sip on so don't feel too badly for her.

Of course a busy day like we had called for dessert.  Sharon ordered some special dessert dumpling that took forever for them to make.

I had a lemon torte with relishes!  The whole meal was very satifying!

We walked back and enjoyed the lights of the city.

We got back to the hotel and I told the girl at the desk that we had had a terrific dinner at the restaurant she had recommended.  I went on about a few things and she then informed us it wasn't the restaurant she had mentioned but that we had picked a very nice one.  We were happy with our choice.  The restaurant was beauitful and the food and service superb.

I found out the restaurant was called St. Peter Stkftskeller on St Peter Bezirk 1/4.  The restaurant we were looking for was just Stiftskeller.  Great mistake.

 A good day!
